Naples Lifestyles: Two Slot Reds And A Gator Snaggle Tooth In The Back

Posted on Friday, May 11, 2012

Ah the Naples lifestyle. More important than owning real estate here in Naples?  How you take advantage of the lifestyles around the property you own.  We like to focus on lifestyles here – as well as real estate – to dispel some of the myths of Florida living, which many see as an old folks home.  We have good athletes, young families, healthy lifestyles and plenty of outdoor sports and culture.  This morning let’s take a look at fishing, and an explanation of of some of the lingo in our blog title.

A quick translation of the title to our article today: we caught and kept two of those wonderful eating redfish (keepers are in the “slot” length of 18”-28” – so “Slot Reds”). Louisiana chefs made these redfish so famous and in fact I enjoyed one of these wild-run, line caught, organic fish for lunch! Along with the redfish we caught a sea trout (these fish possess a single tooth earning them their nickname – “Snaggle Tooth”). The sea trout was in excess of twenty inches (thus a “gator” trout).

Ah life in the glorious “BACK” country of Collier County. There is quite a history to these back country parts including failed homesteaders and down right mean times (Read the book “Killing Mr. Watson” for a view of the culture”). We also have our share of alligator poachers, bird hunters for lady’s hat feathers and plenty of alleged drug running. But if you like fishing, life is good here. Tarpon as big as a man, sea trout, reds, snook, snapper, pompano – all fun on spin or fly rod. Having fished nearly all of my life I cannot begin to share the number of friendships and great times I have enjoyed on the water – both here in Naples, Florida, out west, up north and out of the country. For a fisherman – the Naples lifestyle is something else.

At 7:30 AM (early enough if the tides are right) my friend Rich and I headed out in my flats boat, bombing down the back where there are literally thousands of coves, points, drops, holes and runs no single human could fish in a life time.  Dolphin, manatee, sea turtles and a variety of bird life keep us company during the day.  A little cast net work for live bait (not the easiest thing to master) and decent luck on the tides and we found several fish good enough to join our party. Where we bagged these beauties is between Rich and I but you can find them, or call us and we can set you up with a guide and a boat.

Talk to us about fishing down here and remember it is not about just about owning real estate here in Naples – it’s what you do with your free time once you arrive.

Have a great day and tight lines!
