Naples Lifestyles – Feeling the Hemingway In You? Take A Boat To The Keys And Whoop It Up

(get down here and enjoy year round living on the Gulf of Mexico)

In case there was not enough for you to do here in Naples you might consider the boating lifestyle. Either fishing or cruising you have lots of options. Fisherman will like the seemingly endless back bays for spin or fly-fishing or head out on the Gulf of Mexico for grouper and snapper and “all else” fishing. It is always more fun when you are not quite sure what is coming up from the bottom.

For causing the water Naples is hard to beat. A great jumping off point for the Keys, The Bahamas or a trip around to the East coast and north there are so many options.

This weekend our friends got together and we took two boats down to Key West for some fishing and vacationing. The big joke was who needs a vacation from Naples anyway?! … but it was great to get out of town and change it up.

(our friends enjoying the 90 mile run to Key West)

The ride down was great. Smooth waters and a “max cruise” 90 mile + run to the Key West Light and through the North West Channel into Galleon Marina. What a location. Walk to restaurants and all of Key West, or meet a fishing guide for a day on the water, or just head for the pool and chill out. This is a great spot and we highly recommend it.

Key West’s restaurant’s may be their best kept secret. Sunset street performers at Mallory Square are well known and there are the many shops and tourists attractions but look a little harder and you will find some great dining options.

Our first dinner this trip took us to Ricky’s Blue Heaven. I dare anyone to show me a restaurant with dirt floors and running chickens combined with a wine list featuring three of the five French “premiere cru” bordeaux’s and a chef to match. Fabulous. Order the snapper and a nice white and enjoy. Walk home to your boat through the old town and look at the unbelievably bright night sky.  You need to do this at least once.

Dinner number two was at Louie’s Back Yard – elegant and yet you can show up with shorts and sandals no problem. This trip I have to give the nod to the chef at Louie’s over Rick’s.  Some very creative dishes and new choices well worth the trip.

(a great morning of Tarpon fishing – jumped six landed zero!)

Did I mention fishing? Not always popular with all the boaters but you have to get out there at least one day and try. On this trip my buddy Rich and I went for Tarpon jumping six and landing none! Those circle hooks (my excuse this time) are saving a lot of fish I will tell you.

A final thought watch the weather. We cut our trip one day short when we saw the windfiner.com weather report forecasting a good blow closing in. After a nice choppy ride in a three foot see we cleared the chop about forty miles south of Naples and had a nice ride home. Had we stayed conditions are forecasted for 20+ mph wins for the next eight days. We would have had our fill of fishing and rum at that point!

I hope you can find your way here to Naples. If you are already here why not take a look at the Florida Keys for a nice get away!
