A Tennis Tournament for Old Guys in Retirement – Really?

Posted on Saturday, February 18, 2012

So today I am going to wander over to the club (http://www.windstarclub.com/) for our annual tennis championships. That’s right. A tennis competition in “old, retired, Florida.” Well that is the perception anyway. Let me tell you when you walk on those courts you had better have your shoes strapped on tight and your big boy pants pulled up – you are in for some rocking competition.  With old guys?  Yup.

Let me explain a little here because I think the up north crowd still sees Naples as the place where old folks go to pass on to the hereafter – but personally I am more active, in better shape, and feeling better than I have in years. In part all of this due to less work stress but in large part it is due to year round, more active lifestyle – something I could not quite grab in Chicago – especially the year round part.

Here is a real example. About twelve years ago we were still commuting down here. One Saturday I was stressed out about work and needed some athletic activity to blow off some steam. I headed over to the tennis courts seeking out one of these “old people” to beat. Nothing like a crushing victory to get your spirits up. When arriving at the courts there he was. Although this is a real example we will make up a name for him – Bob will do. Bob was twenty years older than me. I played a good game back in the day. I was in OK shape. Bob crushed me. I played another set with him and he crushed me again. Wow – I thought Florida was the land of old push overs.

So today I play 3.5 level tennis. Good for me, worse than others I know. I am the youngest member of the team. Of the ten players I am near the bottom. Bob is still on the team. Bob is 75 years old. No one can beat Bob. I take lessons, I run, I lift, I am a long distance cyclist. BUT … I cannot out run him, out hit him – you get the idea.

Naples Florida is wide open to those who wish to LIVE. Come on down, improve your health perhaps, and start living.
