Break Out The Paddles – The 38th Annual Naples Canoe Race Is May 10th

It’s that time of year again! The Irish have Saint Patricks Day, The German’s have Octoberfest, many areas throughout the world have Carnival and Mardi Gras, and Naples Florida has the Canoe Races. Arguably the Canoe races are our best festival! Traditionally the snow birds have headed north (although anyone who has driven down 5th Ave lately knows how much Naples has become a year round town), and the locals head out to celebrate.

Many locals choose to skip the actual Canoe Races themselves and head straight to the South end of Keewaydin Island for a day in the sun. Keewaydin can only be accessed by boat, and on the day of the canoe races expect hundreds of boats moored 2-3 deep off of this half mile stretch of pristine protected beach.

If you don’t have boat access, don’t want to commit a whole day to it, or just want to watch the actual canoe races they will not disappoint! Traditionally the best view can be had right from the Naples City Dock where the start/finish line is located. The course snakes around a large part of Naples Bay. The races start at 11 am, with the theme parade, followed by the tippy canoe VIP sprint, practically professional, and ambitious amateurs classes. It all wraps up at 2pm with the awards ceremony and benefits the group Drug Free Collier.

Isn’t Naples great? Either way you decide to celebrate the day in the sun you can’t go wrong. Don’t be caught staying home during Naples greatest festival with something for everyone!
