Good News For The Local Naples Economy – And The Evening Social Life Is Not Bad Either

Posted on Friday, February 10, 2012

Last night we were at dinner on 5th Avenue at Citrus (http://aninsatiableappetite.blogspot.com/2010/12/citrus-restaurant-on-naples-5th-avenue.html) with our friends, the organic restaurant with some of the best local seafood available.  Many thanks to Jay and Paula again for starting this place up – one of our favorites.   When viewing the crowds walking along the streets, listening to the street music and taking in the tropical evening our friends asked “is it always like this in Naples?”  Well in season – just about every night is hopping in town and the local economic results seem to prove this out.

I shared the comments from Oakes Market and Frank at the fuel dock as they felt the season was good – perhaps the best in a long while and now we have some more data to go along with the comments.  Maybe the CNN Money guys will be right to call us a top ten real estate turnaround market.

So what’s the new news?  Yesterday the Naples Daily News reported on some data  recently released by the Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce.  The report stated  “In a survey of more than 200 business leaders, a quarter of whom come from the area’s larger businesses:
■ 87 percent say the economy is improving or staying the same.
■ 44 percent said they had added staff to their companies compared to 34 percent last year.
■ While 15 percent said they had cut employment at their companies, this is a reduction from 21 percent last year.
■ Of the 44 percent of business leaders who believe the economy is improving, two-thirds report they have plans to expand their staffs in the coming year.”

Nice.  An economy finding its legs, smaller inventories causing some Naples real estate scarcity, stable if not improving prices, a strong tourist season and a town that parties like a rock star on a Thursday evening (well our laid back west coast version of rock star partying).  Naples is a great place to live and we see encouraging signs for Naples real estate.

I also would like to point out there are still a lot of folks hurting down here.  It would be disrespectful not to point out the economy or business rebound is unevenly distributed and like the rest of the nation we seem to struggle to spread the wealth across the County.  I think of my friends at Habitat for Humanity (http://habitatcollier.org/)and the outreach work at Trinity by The Cove (http://www.trinitybythecove.com) and know we have a lot of work to do.  Celebrate the good news of economic improvement but let’s keep working to help everyone along.

Tell us your thoughts and if you are not here already – come on down for some Florida sunshine and fun.
