Hurricane Season Over: Zero For Six

Posted on Friday, December 02, 2011

One of my favorite things to do when visiting my up north friends – particularly when discussing sensationalism in the American news media – is to ask them how many hurricanes have hit Florida in the last few years. This past summer responses ranged from 4 to 32 hurricanes in the last five years!  Wow.

First let me say any storm which causes damage or worse, takes human life, is terrible and something not to joke about. However the continual news coverage of “severe weather” in our fair state is often found humorous in these parts. Our clients will ask us from time to time about hurricane risk and we realize it is very much on some people’s minds.

Well December 1 marks the official end to the “hurricane season” and once again no storms this year.  According to Florida Realtors “The season ended Wednesday as the sixth straight year without U.S. landfall of a major hurricane, yet Irene was one of the costliest storms in U.S. history and killed at least 47 people here and at least eight more in the Caribbean and Canada.” At NaplesBestAddresses.com our hearts do go out to those who lost loved ones and suffered storm damage in other parts of the country.

So the answer our clients and friends is zero. A big fat zero for the number of hurricanes to hit Florida in the last six years. Sure, keep up your wind and flood insurance as we do, and feel free to train for emergency shelter work with the Red Cross as we do (we serve a mean macaroni and cheese in the shelter) but do not live in constant fear of “major storms.” Will they come again? Sure. Do we see 4 to 32 storms over the last few years? Not even close.
